CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One person is dead, another with serious injuries after a losing control of a Honda Accord and striking a tree Sunday afternoon.
Around 1:30, the Charlotte Fire Department says nearly a dozen firefighters worked to free a victim from the wreckage after a crash at the intersection of Winterhaven and Albemarle Roads.
CFD says two people were taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, one of whom, the driver, was later pronounced deceased.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the Honda Accord was weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed when the driver began to lose control, over-corrected and began to slide sideways when it ran off the road and struck a tree. No other vehicles were involved.
Police identified the driver as 24-year-old Yoan Alberto Hernandez Tosca; the passenger is identified as 30-year-old Rangel Garcia Cabrera.
Both Tosca and Cabrera were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, police say, and it's not yet clear if alcohol was a factor.
