ROCKHILL, S.C. -- The former sheriff of Lancaster County has been arrested, accused of vandalizing his neighbors' home and car with a sling shot.
On Friday, June 6, around 7:30 p.m. Rock Hill Police were called to a home in the 1400 block of Hyacinthia Lane in reference to property damage at the victim's home.
The victim told police she kept hearing popping noises on her front door and went to investigate. She continued she saw her neighbor, 58-year-old John Walter Cauthen, standing by the back corner of his home facing her residence.
Then, the victim said she heard another pop then glass shattering. That's when she opened the front door and found the glass of the exterior door shattered. A witness corroborated the victim's story.
Officers recovered several sling shot pellets, marbles and paint balls in the victim's front yard, as well as sling shot pellets in Cauthen's yard.
Then, a few hours later, officers were called to another home in the 1400 block of Hyacinthia Lane in reference to personal property damage.
This time, the victim told police she thought someone had shot her windshield with a pellet gun after noticing a small dent. The victim also told police she found several sling shot pellets, marbles and paint balls on the side of her house.
Cauthen is charged with malicious damage to property over $2000 in connection with the shattered glass door and malicious damage to property $2000 or less for the car windshield. Police say he turned himself in to the Rock Hill Police Department Thursday around noon.
