HILDEBRAN, N.C.-- There is disturbing new information concerning the Burke County teacher charged with being part of an international child pornography ring.
Michael Alexander, 54, has given a partial confession to some of what he is accused of, according to Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant.
He was very smart in keeping this under wraps, said Whisenant.
The Sheriff says Alexander used his position as a teacher at Hildebran Elementary to take advantage of students and photograph some of them inside his home in Morganton and inside his own classroom.
My understanding was he was a drama teacher so it wasn't unusual for him to have costumes and things and to shoot pictures. So, I think that is one of the ways he got away with it, said Whisenant.
Alexander was arrested Wednesday after an investigation that started in Barcelona, Spain, linked him to what investigators from the FBI, State Bureau of Investigation, and the Sheriff's Department say was a clandestine, international child porn ring.
Whisenant says Alexander is cooperating to a degree.
He has, during our interviews, confessed to some of the things but not all of them. We feel like there are more crimes that we don't know about yet and that s why we are continuing our investigation.
A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for July 3 for Alexander who remains locked up under a $1 million bond.
