CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A major interstate interchange in Charlotte has reopened after repairs were made when a tractor trailer overturned and went up in flames on Tuesday.

The southbound I-85 ramp to I-77 South, Exit 38, was closed from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. today for repairs.

Highway patrol says the driver of the tractor trailer was going too fast when the big rig overturned on the ramp on Tuesday afternoon.

The entire cab of the truck caught fire because of a diesel leak during the crash. The driver was able to escape but was taken to CMC for burn injuries.

Some of the asphalt also burned, forcing the hazmat team and firefighters to remain on scene for hours. The road will need to be repaved.
