CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If you have a bunch of old important papers sitting around, stuff like tax returns and bank statements, don't just toss them in the trash. it's better to shred them.

Thanks to shread events, it's possible for everyone. Why is this important? Because according to the latest data, credit card theft is exploding. Between 2005 and 2010, it went up 50 percent, and as a result, ID theft has become big business. Here's a scary statistic:the number of malicious programs written to steal your information has grown to about 130 million, up from a million in 2007, and it's getting so bad that id theft is expected to surpass traditional theft as the leading form of property crime.

One of the pools of people getting more and more vulnerable are children. A 2012 study found that stealing the identity of a child is harder to detect and harder to clean up because it s not usually discovered until that child goes to apply for his own credit years later. That same study says 70 percent of child ID theft is the result of friendly fraud, meaning a close friend or family member did it.
