CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- The FAA is investigating after a fatal plane crash in Catawba County in Newton on Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration says a Stolp Starduster SA300, an amateur-built aircraft, crashed into a wheat field near Newton around 8 p.m. Sunday.

The pilot was the only one aboard, officials say, and was pronounced on the scene.

The Sheriff's Office has identified the pilot as James Thomas, of Denver.
