HILDEBRAN, N.C. -- Neighbors in Burke County are not happy over chicken houses being built just yards away from their homes. Just about every neighbor living nearby has signed a petition against those chicken houses, saying it is a little too close for comfort.

Gail Fulbright and her husband have lived in the community on the outskirts of Hildebran for more than 50 years.

It s a good place to raise children, a good place to get your roots down in a community, she said.

But she worries that s all about to change.

The stench and the smell is number one. Number two is our property values (will) go down drastically.

The owner of the property that backs up to the Fulbrights is building a commercial chicken house operation four chicken houses in all.

She and her neighbors petitioned Burke County to stop the chicken houses.

It does not seem fair that 141 names would be thrown under the bus for the benefit of one family, Fulbright added.

But the county said their hands are tied. State law says farms are exempt from zoning regulations.

We've done all the things we were supposed to do, said property owner Steven Parker. Tell them to quit eating chicken.
