CHARLOTTE, N.C. A Charlotte Bobcats player is helping out 15 women living in transition homes with a big gift.

Charlotte Bobcats Center, Brendan Haywood, surprised the women at the Salvation Army's Center of Hope shelter Sunday afternoon.

Haywood announced he will pay their Duke Energy bill for one year. The women and they re children are part of the Rapid Re-housing Program that helps women in transition with job resources and assistance.

One of the recipients, a mother of four told NBC Charlotte, the gift is a blessing.

It s going to help me a lot because my little boy is about to start basketball so I ll be able to buy him clothes and stuff he needs for school and stuff like that to play basketball, said Rochelle Monroe.

Haywood grew up living in a single-parent home and said he just wanted to help out other struggling single-parent families.
