MONROE, N.C. -- Paramedics rushed four people to the hospital after a train smashed through the tractor portion of an 18-wheeler Tuesday afternoon just north of Monroe.
According to police, the tractor trailer was hauling PVC pipe on Old Charlotte Highway at North Rocky River Road when the traffic stopped in front of him around 4:45 p.m. The driver stopped on the train tracks and then the crossing arms started to come down as the train approached.
Police said that the driver tried to move to the right to get out of the way but couldn't.
The train tore through the trailer, throwing PVC piping everywhere.
Four cars were involved in the accident along with another tractor trailer. The four people hurt were taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Union with minor injuries, according to police.
Police have charged the driver of the 18-wheeler for stopping on a railroad crossing.
