SALISBURY, N.C. -- A Rowan County man is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon after authorities say a confrontation took a dangerous turn.

Shortly after midnight, Rowan County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a home in the 1000 block of Ashford Circle in Salisbury to find a man, Jarrett Leonard, suffering from injuries sustained after being shot with birdshot from a 12-gauge shotgun.

Authorities say Leonard went to the home of the suspect, James Calvin Scott, and began beating on the side of the residence. Scott asked Leonard to leave several times, officials say, but Leonard refused.

At this point, deputies say Scott armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun and confronted Leonard outside, again asking him to get off the property. That's when Leonard took steps towards Scott, officials say, and Scott fired the weapon.

Leonard sustained numerous pellet strikes to his upper torso and trauma to the face. By the time Leonard arrived at Rowan Regional Medical Center, his lung had collapsed, but medical personnel was able to correct it before flying him to Baptist Hospital for further treatment.

Scott is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and booked in to the Rowan County Detention Center under a $4000 bond.
