CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte City Council leaders will hear a request from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police tonight for new rifles.

The department needs the okay from the city to use money seized from drug crimes for the new firepower. CMPD claims rifles are more accurate than handguns and shotguns and would keep officers at a safe distance in some violent crimes.

That new rifle request is just one of many big decisions the council has to make in its first meeting with new Mayor Dan Clodfelter at the helm. He was sworn in last Wednesday -- two weeks after Patrick Cannon stepped down from office.

Cannon is accused of taking bribes. He could be indicted as soon as tomorrow. That's when a grand jury is scheduled to meet for a second time to discuss the corruption scandal against the former mayor.
