CONCORD, N.C. -- Dr. Allen Cherer has been a pediatrician for 37 years; his medical record shows that he's been a good doctor with no marks against him.
"Allen is a first class neighbor, a first class human being as far as I'm concerned," said Debby Woodhouse, his next door neighbor.
She was as shocked as anyone to learn that on Sunday, 63-year-old Cherer had been arrested for allegedly exposing himself at the I-77 welcome center near I-485.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say that on last Wednesday they got a call about a man behaving strangely at the rest stop.
When an officer went to investigate, he says he walked up to Cherer's car and the doctor allegedly had his private parts exposed.
After police investigated for several days a warrant was issued for Cherer's arrest.
Woodhouse says the doctor has done a lot of good and she hopes the public won't rush to judgment.
"He's been very helpful. I've had medical questions because I have a daughter whose had a few medical issues," she said.
Late Monday, Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast placed Cherer on administrative leave pending the outcome of their own investigation.
The North Carolina Medical Board is also taking a look; officials in Raleigh won't confirm they are investigating Cherer.
But officials say that sexual misconduct type charges against any doctor would get a quick response.
The board could order the doctor to get a mental evaluation, and could sanction him, by suspending or pulling his license altogether.
"He is innocent until proven guilty and I'm praying for him," said Woodhouse.
