CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A case investigated by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office and Homeland Security, ended Wednesday with the sentencing of a dozen suspects convicted for their roles in a multi-county, multi-million dollar cocaine trafficking operation in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Union and Rowan Counties.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Rockwell resident Freddie Andaya was the leader of the drug conspiracy that trafficked more than 300 kilograms of cocaine throughout Mecklenburg, Iredell, Union and Rowan Counties. Authorities say the drugs had a street value of more than $10 million.

According to information presented in court, Andaya had a stash house in Concord, from which nearly $350,000 in cash, along with an AK-47 and 3.5 kilos of cocaine were seized. Also seized from the stash house, prosecutors say, were ledgers containing more than $9 million-worth of transactions over just a three-month period.

Throughout their investigation, law enforcement says an additional 11 kilos of cocaine, three firearms and another $600,000 in cash were recovered.

Wednesday, Andaya was sentenced to serve life plus five year in federal prison. Federal prison sentences are served without the possibility of parole.

An additional 11 defendants were sentenced Wednesday in connection with this investigation, many of whom are local.
