GASTONIA, N.C. -- 34 years and 10 months: that's the minimal amount of time Scott Goins will spend behind bars, with the potential for that sentence to go as long as 44 years. The jury found him guilty of 17 of the 20 sexual abuse charges against him.

Just after 4:00 Monday afternoon, Goins sat as one by one the verdicts for charges of sexual abuse were read, followed by his sentencing. District Attorney Locke Bell wants him locked up for life.

"I will be happy if he dies in prison," Bell said.

The father of one of the three victims spoke with us about Goins, who he says used to speak about the importance of family and had earned his trust.

"It's just so sad when you find out that you were betrayed," the man said.

Judge Jesse Caldwell gave everyone involved the opportunity to speak after the verdicts were read, including Goins' nephew Tyler Goins who says the family has been through enough.

"The one thing that we ask is that you allow us to step forward as a family," Goins said. "No more harrassment, no more anything. Let us live our lives. Let us enjoy the rest that we have, and move on from this."

Defense Attorney Brent Ratchford says he plans to appeal and has grown very close with Goins over the last year.

"I Consider him a very good friend of mine and I'm still very honored to be his attorney," Ratchford said. "We fought hard, the jury did not go our way, so we'll fight at the next level."

Right now, Scott Goins is in police custody for the foreseeable future, which is a relief to the one victim's father.

"We hope that we've prevented other children from suffering the same fate that our boys did."
