COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A former jail officer is suing York County officials over an alleged cover up of an inmate's death.
The lawsuit was first reported by The Herald of Rock Hill and filed last month. In it, former jail officer Michael Billioni says his free speech rights were violated after he voiced concerns about the death of Joshua Grose.
Grose was jailed on allegations he killed his stepmother and neighbor when he died in October. Authorities say he fought with officers and was put in a restraint chair after hitting his head against the wall.
Grose had a cut on his head but wasn't taken to the hospital. He was in cardiac arrest when paramedics returned and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
A sheriff's department attorney didn't immediately comment.
