MONROE, N.C. -- Monroe police have charged a Union County man with two counts of second-degree murder after he killed two people in a crash last week.
Police said Jose Herrera was charged Tuesday night with second-degree murder and DWI after last Wednesday's deadly crash on Highway 74.
Investigators said that Herrera was travelling west in his Dodge Ram 1500 truck on U.S. 74 near John Moore Road when his vehicle crossed the median and struck a Volvo head-on. Also causing the Volvo to slam into a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on U.S. 74.
The two victims killed, 70-year-old Laral Leslie Callahan and 64-year-old Paul Randall, were in the Volvo during the time of the accident.
Police said Herrera had been drinking prior to the accident.
Herrera was also charged with reckless driving. He was in the Union County jail under a $200,000 bond.
