CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hundreds of students at UNCC began checking into area hotels instead of their apartments as part of their move-in day.

About 1,500 students had signed up to live in four off-campus apartment complexes, but the buildings are not move-in ready.

"I've never had this kind of problem before," said Nathan Ricer of Weddington.

The senior music major says he moved in several weeks ago, and hopes his apartment will be ready in two weeks.

"It's kind of awkward at first, because I'm sleeping 10 feet away that you've never ever met before," said Ricer.

Apartment developers have paid for the cost of their room, meals and storage. Some hotels are offering shuttle service, and CMPD has been coordinating security control in and around the hotels.

The apartments were built to meet the demands of a growing university. UNCC has seen record enrollment of 27,000 students this year.

Martin Hall is UNCC'S newest residence hall. Housing director Jacklyn Simpson says new buildings are being built as old ones get replaced.

"Last year we opened two new ones, next year, we are scheduled to open another new one," she said.

Simpson says the University's Master Plan involves increasing the number of on-campus residents from 5,500 to 7,000 students.

The off-campus apartments when completed will house 2,500 students.

Melissa Rolleri drove 12 hours from New Jersey to help her daughter move in.

"I took a whole week off thinking she was moving into her apartment and it didn't happen, but they kind of rectified everything so now I am okay," she said.

Her daughter says she is looking forward to moving into her new apartment with two other friends, and say she is ready for the new school year.

"Now I'm kind of glad I came a little bit earlier this week, now that I'm ready for school, I have my pass for school and everything is better," said daughter Olivia.
