WAXHAW – It's not every day an African spurred tortoise walks up in your backyard.

A Waxhaw family discovered the tortoise on Sunday and took him to Cold Blooded Encounters in Monroe.

The tortoise is native to Africa and was likely someone's pet.

"They travel 2 mph," said Daphne Reeder, Assister Director of Cold Blooded Encounters. "He more than likely belongs to someone in the Carolinas."

The tortoises can live up to 150 years and Reeder believes this one is about 50-years-old.

African Spurred Tortoises can be purchased from a reptile expo for about $200.

If no one claims the tortoise he will be used to help educated children.
