COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Construction crews are near the halfway point of a project to expand Interstate 20 in eastern Richland County to three lanes in each direction.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation says the work which has split the eastbound lanes of I-20 for about 8 miles will be removed Sunday because the three new eastbound lanes are finished.

The work also forced traffic getting on I-20 east from Interstate 77 to detour to surface streets at night.

In about a week, construction crews will split the westbound lanes. The DOT says it will release more details before the change is made.

The DOT says splitting the lanes cut the length of time to finish the project from 36 months to about 20 months. The work should be finished next spring.
