STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A four-year project to improve the interchange between Interstate 40 and 77 in Iredell County is nearly on schedule despite a year of heavy rain.

Zachry Construction Project Manager Sean Perkins told The Statesville Record and Landmark (http://bit.ly/1dGMlH8 ) that the rain kept heavy machinery stuck in the mud for days at a time, but crews were able to keep the $250 million project on track.

Workers are building a multilevel interchange to handle the 70,000 vehicles that go through the Statesville interchange each day. Construction started in September 2012 and should continue through 2016.

Officials say the interchange is one of the most important intersections in North Carolina.
