CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An overturned tractor trailer caught fire on a ramp on I-85 Tuesday afternoon.
The highway patrol says the driver was going too fast when the truck turned on the southbound I-85 ramp to I-77 south.
The entire cab of the truck caught fire because of a diesel leak during the crash. The driver was able to escape but was taken to CMC for burn injuries.
Some of the asphalt also burned, forcing the hazmat team and firefighters to remain on scene for hours. The road will need to be repaved.
A detour is in place until the lanes reopen; traffic is being diverted to I-77 North, then following I-77 North to Sunset Road West, Exit 16B, where motorists may then take Sunset Road to re-access I-77 South.
