NEWCASTLE, Wash. -- A deer tangled up in a prickly wire has received lots of attention from neighbors who have spotted the animal several times in the last couple months.

Ana Hueto took a picture of the deer when she spotted it on Sunday near Southeast 83rd Street and 144th Avenue Southeast in Newcastle.

"He has five loops of barbed wire around his neck," said Hueto. She affectionately refers to the deer as Bambi. "I was very sad and I wanted to do something."

She said she called the authorities.

Tuesday night, the deer was spotted in neighbor Mark Sands' backyard.

"He kind of appears on and off, and he doesn't appear to be injured," said Sands. "He's not staggering or anything, but somebody is going to have to tranquilize him to get it off."

Neighbors want to remove the wire, but they know it is not safe to get too close to the deer.

King 5 contacted Fish and Wildlife. Sergeant Kim Chandler said the best thing to do is contact their office at 425-775-1311 during business hours with sightings of the animal.
