Lance Light said he knew the conditions were dangerous when he and a friend decided to go backcountry skiing on Berthoud Pass in Colorado on Saturday.

Video from a helmet camera captured the terrifying moments when the skier was caught in an avalanche, which he caused. Light said the snow split beneath him, and moments later he was overwhelmed.

In the video, you can see Light battling to get his bearings after he deploys his avalanche air bag and comes out on top of the snow.

He and a friend who was snowboarding with him had the right gear and training to survive the ordeal, but were still in a dangerous spot.

Officials said Light is lucky no one was injured.
