CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two people were injured in an accident involving a school bus in west Charlotte Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 9:15 a.m. in the 2900 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. Emergency crews said 21-year-old John Froneberger suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

It took 18 firefighters 20 minutes to rescue Froneberger from his car after it collided with a school bus.

The driver of the bus, Shera Hubert, was also injured. MEDIC said Hubert suffered minor injuries and was also taken to CMC.

There were no students on the bus during the time of the accident, according to officials.

One witness said the wreck took place during heavy traffic.

“I guess he was going too fast and he couldn’t swerve or nothing.  He just hit the back of the bus and went right up under it,” said Cass Byers.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reopened all outbound lanes in the 2900 block of Wilkinson Boulevard a few hours after the accident happened.
