AVERY COUNTY, N.C. -- Officials closed several North Carolina schools on Tuesday due to the snow and wind gusts from the Hurricane Sandy storm, and already schools are scheduled to be closed again Wednesday.

Avery County schools were closed Monday and Tuesday after large snowfall totals and strong wind gusts.

The school system announced Tuesday afternoon that classes will not be held Wednesday, either.  An optional work day for teachers is allowed on a two-hour delay.

Ashe County schools will also be closed for the second straight day Wednesday due to strong winds and snow.  Schools are closed for both students and teachers.

Appalachian State University was shut down Tuesday due to more snowfall. Lees-McRae College was delayed until 12 p.m.

The cold part of Superstorm Sandy that is causing problems along the East Coast could bring one foot or more of snow to the North Carolina mountains.
