Man rescued after car crashes into northeast Charlotte pond

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man had to be rescued after the car he was in crashed into a pond in northeast Charlotte Thursday morning.

The incident happened on Merlane Drive near Sugar Creek Road around 1:30 a.m.

Two people were in the car when the woman driving lost control and crashed into the pond, leaving the car partially submerged.

The woman was able to escape without injuries, but the man had to be rescued by firefighters.

The Charlotte Fire Department said it took 18 firefighters and about 20 minutes to free the man trapped in the car.

The man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries.
