KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- No one was injured when a car slammed into a train in Gaston County early Wednesday morning.

The incident happened on J.E. Herndon Access Road at Bessmemer City Highway  around 4 a.m. after a car went around the railroad arms and hit a train traveling from New York to New Orleans.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says the train had 263 passengers and was traveling at 55 mph. Tryonota Fire Capt. Justin Toney says the train did not derail, but the lead engine was damaged.

Dylan Colt O'Daniel, 20, has been charged with reckless driving and failure to stop for a railroad gate.

The train is still blocking J.E. Herndon Access Road while crews investigate the accident.
