CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A teacher at University Meadows Elementary School was arrested Wednesday on charges of assaulting a child under 12 years old, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police confirmed.

Gail Attaway, a kindergarten through third grade teacher at the school, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault on a child under 12.

Police had obtained a warrant for arrest and booked her into the Mecklenburg County Jail Wednesday. Her bond was set at $30,000.

A CMPD spokesman said he could not give out details about the case because the investigation was led by police with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Attaway was first employed by CMS in 1987 but resigned in 1989 for an unknown reason.  She returned in 1999 to CMS and taught at Druid Hills Elementary before moving to University Meadows in 2004.

Attaway has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, officials said.
