DAVIDSON, N.C. -- When it comes to learning, the executive director of the Community School of Davidson likes to think outside the box.

"I don't know that you can put us in a box because I think what we do is what we believe is best for kids. And sometimes what's best for one kid isn't always best for all kids," said Joy Warner.

Warner's approach to teaching things like math, science and history involve the arts as well.

"Like yesterday, we danced and we sang songs about geometry," said student Alexis Green.

Students also incorporated geometry into a dance routine.

"We use the arts to teach cross-curriculum," teacher Amy Tomalis said.

Some students will also perform an opera that will include part of their U.S. history lesson. They'll write, produce and direct the entire show themselves.

"It's amazing because we do so many different things. We have great teachers," Green said.

Warner founded the Community School of Davidson in 2001. Today, they have a waitlist of about 2,000 students and they'll be opening a new high school this fall.
