CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A woman was injured and a man was arrested after North Carolina state troopers said a chase led to a serious crash on Brookshire Boulevard Tuesday afternoon.
A pursuit began around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on southbound I-85.
Troopers say they clocked Willie Cordell Wright, 27, driving 95 mph in a 55 mph zone. They began pursuing Wright, and then realized the car was listed as stolen upon running the tags.
Highway Patrol says the driver slowed as if to pull over, and a woman jumped from the car near LIttle Rock Road. Wright then ran over the woman, who suffered serious injuries and was taken to CMC for treatment.
The man and woman did know each other, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The driver continued on until the second crash at I-485 and Brookshire Boulevard. There, Wright hit a fire hydrant while exiting the highway, and then a pole. The impact sent debris flying, which a hit separate vehicle. That driver also wrecked but was not hurt. Power was lost in the area due to the impact.
A trooper on his way to assist also crashed in the 6000 block of Brookeshire Boulevard. He was not hurt.
Wright is in police custody. He was taken to the hospital and later transported to jail. He faces several charges including felony speeding to elude, hit and run with serious injury and possession of a stolen car.
