LAKE MARION, S.C. -- People were shocked to see a manatee wash up on the shores of a South Carolina lake recently.
A man using a metal detector along the shores saw it bobbing in the water in Lake Marion and didn't know what it was.
The state's Department of Natural Resources confirmed that it was a manatee and say it probably swam up through the boat locks.
They say it’s uncommon for the mammals to be so far inland this late in the year.
It's too early to tell what killed the animal, but authorities are investigating and say it could be the cold temperatures.
