Investigators are trying to determine if sanitizer caused one patient to catch fire at an Oregon children's hospital.
Officials say an 11-year-old girl was painting in her room when she caught on fire earlier this month.
The child's father said she used hand sanitizer to clean a table, and the alcohol-based substance and static electricity may be to blame. The cause of the fire is still being investigated
Dr. Stacy Nicholson of the Oregon Health and Science University said, “No, this is a really unusual event. I don't think anything like this has happened either at Dornbecher or at OHSU. In any hospital this would be an incredibly rare event. I don't want to speculate on what the cause could be; the fire marshal has done the investigation we are waiting the fire marshal's investigation."
The child is a cancer survivor and was at the hospital undergoing treatment for a head injury.
Now, she's being treated for burns at another hospital.
