Former volunteer firefighter killed in Stanly Co. house fire

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. -- A  former volunteer firefighter and his three dogs were killed in a Stanly County house early Friday morning.

Stanly County fire officials said 60-year-old Donnie Smith was killed when his home caught fire around 12 a.m.

A neighbor called 911 after she saw flames and smoke coming from the home off of Old Aquadale Road, officials said.

Crews put out the fire quickly, then found Smith's body in the back of the home.

Firefighters told NBC Charlotte reporter Katie Killen that Smith was a former volunteer firefighter with the Aquadale Fire Department.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
