Inmate dies in Rowan Co. Detention Center

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says an inmate died while in the Rowan County Detention Center last weekend.

Officials said Richard James Cooley, 48, of Woodleaf commited suicide on Sunday.

Cooley was sentenced to approximately two years in prison on Friday, and then jumped from the second floor of the detention center around 1:30 p.m.

He was transported to Rowan Regional Medical Center and then Baptist Hospital but later died.

Cooley was in prison after guilty pleas to several charges including possession of a firearm by a felon, DWI, probation violation and failure to appear in court.
