CHARLOTTE, N.C. – What’s the most popular name for a dog in Mecklenburg County? Bella-- by far. NBC Charlotte analyzed data from more than 109,000 dog licenses compiled by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Control.

Bella was the most popular name (1,311), followed by Max, Lucy, Bailey and Buddy. The complete and searchable list of more than 17,000 different names is below:

The most popular breed listed is the Labrador Retriever (15,334), followed by short-haired Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls and German Shepherds. The ZIP code with the most dogs is also the one with the most people: 28277, which encompasses South Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Below is an interactive map that shows the most popular names and breeds broken down by zip code:

The database has limitations. According to calculations by the American Veterinary Association, a county the size of Mecklenburg should have more than 224,000 dogs, which would suggest less than half of the county’s dogs are registered. The database also shows only 35,015 cats registered with animal control, while the AVA estimates that more than 245,000 cats would live in Mecklenburg County. And the breed listed is subjective; an owner lists the breed based on what he or she thinks it is, not what it actually is. For example, a pit bull/German Shepherd mix could be listed as a pit bull, German Shepherd or a mix.
Still, the database provides a glimpse of dog ownership in Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Myers Park and Eastover have more St. Bernards than any other area of Charlotte, while pit bulls outnumber Labrador Retrievers in only two ZIP codes: 28206 (Roughly the area north of uptown between I-77 and North Tryon Street) and 28208 (West Charlotte).

Our NBC Charlotte Dog Dashboard allows you to view the most popular dog names, breeds and areas. You can search for names and breeds alphabetically and by popularity. It allows you to find the number of dogs named Fido (5), the number of Yorkshire Terriers living in Uptown Charlotte (66), or the number of short-haired Chihuahuas named Bruiser (7).
