CORNELIUS, N.C. -- A desire to help leukemia patients and others suffering from blood cancers brought out runners and walkers from across the area Saturday morning.

Community members, including NBC Charlotte's own Dave Wagner who emceed the event, came together for the Be the Match race in Jetton Park.

Participants raised thousands of dollars prior to the event, helping the local chapter come close to its $75,000 goal. As of late Saturday morning, they had just more than $5,000 to go.

NBC Charlotte is working with Be the Match to help find bone marrow and cord blood donors for people suffering from life threatening diseases.
