CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man and his girlfriend were robbed while trying to get money from the ATM. One of the suspects, the victim says, was carrying a machete.

A quick trip to the ATM on Abermarle Road near Harrisburg Road proved quite eventful for Brad McAlexander and his girlfriend. McAlexander said he feared his life would have been in danger if the armed bandits managed to get inside his vehicle.

“We could have lost our lives,” McAlexander said.

It was early Sunday morning around 4 when they pulled their van up to the ATM. McAlexander and his girlfriend say they didn't notice the spying eyes tucked behind nearby dumpsters.

Once McAlexander put in his card and entered his pin, his girlfriend noticed the robbers.

“She started tapping me on my leg,” he recalled, “And I looked at her. He come up to the window and stuck a machete in my chest.”

McAlexander says he told the machete-wielding robber to take the money, but apparently he and his cohorts wanted more. A second man snatched McAlexander's bank card, while a third attempted to open the passenger side door.

“They were yanking on her door trying to get in,” he said. “But we pulled our van into drive--the doors locked… I stuck my arm in between the knife and him and he started slashing.”

McAlexander fought with the guy by his window, yelling for his girlfriend to go.

“I would have had to get out of the van if they would have gotten her out,” he said.

The crooks got McAlexander’s ATM card and cash and ran off into the woods.

Police are still investigating the crime and plan to check out surveillance video.
