ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- A man shot by a burglar Monday morning is still in the hospital in serious condition.

"It’s kind of a waiting process at this point," says friend Steve Lee.

Lee is a close friend and attends the same church as Marcus Kaufman. Lee said that he has been in constant contact with Kaufman's family all day.

"The bullet hit him pretty much in the back center of the head, and stopped just behind his right eye," said Lee. "There is some brain swelling; I guess that they have to wait to stabilize, and to see what type of progress he's going to make to see what he's going to do."

Kaufman is still in CMC Main. Lee said that he has shown some improvement, but there is still a long way to go. Kaufman, his wife and other members of the church were set to leave Tuesday night to go on a church outreach ministry at prisons.

"...to go sing at some prisons, preach at some prisons, pray with some people," Lee explained.

It is not known if the other members of the group will still go on the trip which was expected to last a few weeks.

Lee adds that he hopes the person responsible would give up and "face what he has done".
