CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A neighborhood plagued by crime is now turning things around and getting some recognition for it.

People in that neighborhood say they were fed up. But now Citiside is a little safer, and it's all thanks to a partnership between residents and police officers.

June Johnson needed something to change, "It’s really nerve racking-- it has been. As a person who home has been broken into twice, and so to be able to go a year and not have that happen, it's giving my family some peace of mind.”

Lt. Todd Garrett says for a while police, were responding to five break-ins a week in the east Charlotte community.

But neighbors would rarely call the cops to report anything unusual.

“A year ago some people were even afraid to make the phone call," Johnson said.

The property management teamed up with police and the people living here, and crime stats in the community are now way down.

There are now regular community meetings, and even more regular police patrols.

“We still have crime, we still have that occasional robbery that may occur, but it’s not to the level it was once before,” said Lt.Todd Garrett.
