YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- A woman accused of murdering her boyfriend and former York mayor Melvin Roberts has been found guilty.
A 12 person jury unanimously reached the verdict in the trial of Julia Phillips.
Jurors deliberated for about four hours.
Roberts was strangled and found lying in his driveway on February 4, 2010. Phillips was inside a car with duct tape around her ankle and her neck after she told police she pulled it away.
York County Solicitor Kris Hodge told jurors during the trial that Phillips played a part in Roberts’ death because she feared that the 79-year-old businessman was about to end their relationship and cut off Phillips financially.
Phillips was sentenced to life in prison.
