Get this: a police dog in Massachusetts found a handgun and then fired it!

Essex County officials were chasing three men in a car after hearing gun shots down the street.

One man got out of the car and ran over to a sidewalk, and ditched a loaded handgun in a snowbank.

The officer's K-9 sniffed it out, and then managed to pull the trigger!

"I've been in this business a long time. I've seen a lot of K-9's locate weapons. This is the first time I've seen a case of where the gun discharged," said Lawrence Police Chief John Romero.

“I would imagine the dog was startled. But these dogs that make it through the training are very courageous animals. They're the best of the best."

The suspects were arrested and arraigned Monday for illegal firearm possession among other charges.
