Police: Man arrested in shooting death of mayor's in-law

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested a man for his involvement in a deadly north Charlotte shooting last Friday.

Police charged 40-year old Arthur Givens with murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats.

Authorities say he shot and killed Donald Gist, Jr., along Beatties Ford Road Friday afternoon. Gist was the brother-in-law of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.

Police say Givens' criminal history includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury, use of a firearm during drug trafficking, weapon offenses, felony drug offenses and probation violations.
