CHARLOTTE, NC --   To his alleged victims, Jaime Perez was Edwin Lewis, an officer with the Department of Motor Vehicles.  But to DMV inspectors, Perez was just a man who broke the law.

A few days ago inspectors searched Perez’s Beech Nut Road home in west Charlotte looking for evidence of fraud.  Perez is accused of portraying himself as a DMV worker and then selling IDs to victims.

According to a search warrant, investigators found ID’s and looked for a DMV uniform.

Investigators say Perez told victims he could get them a legitimate North Carolina Driver’s License for a fee ranging from $500 to $1,500.

At the Beech Nut Road home NewsChannel 36 spoke to Perez’s son.  He was asked if he knew where his father was.

"I don’t know too much about that,” the son said.

The son seemed to indicate that his father had left him in a bad predicament, which is a complaint that NewsChannel 36 heard repeatedly in the neighborhood.

Some neighbors said that Perez worked on cars and had a few customers who were not satisfied.

"He had a lot of trouble out of people in the neighborhood doing what he was supposed to do on their cars.  Everybody about fell out with him," said one neighbor.

Inspectors say that when it came to licenses, Perez took the money and ran.

He has not been arrested, but there are three warrants on various false pretense charges.
