CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Grocery chain Publix is expected to continue its push into the Charlotte region with a new store in South End, according to the Charlotte Business Journal.

The paper reports the store will be on a four-acre lot on South Boulevard across the street from Lowe's Home Improvement store near Iverson Way.

Publix announced in September it will open a grocery store in Ballantyne in 2014.

The Ballantyne store will be located at Providence Road West and Johnston Road just south of Ballantyne Country Club.  An exact date of its grand opening is unknown, but the company said it is planned for sometime in early 2014, depending on construction, permits, weather and other factors.

Publix has more than 1,000 grocery stores across South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee.  It currently has 45 stores in South Carolina.

Publix opened stores in Tega Cay and Indian Land last month in South Carolina.  Those two stores are expected to bring 1,800 jobs to the area.

The South End store news reported by CBJ sites real estate sources, and the company has not made anything official, declining comment to NBC Charlotte on Wednesday.

But the company has not been shy talking about its desire to move to the Queen City.

"Our customers and associates have long asked us to come to North Carolina," said CEO Ed Crenshaw on September 19.  "We look forward to providing the Charlotte community with the high quality service and products that our customers have come to expect and that have earned us recognition throughout the industry."
