CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police say a man cut off his electronic monitoring device before stabbing a taxi driver during a robbery in SouthPark Friday morning.

The robbery and assault occurred near the intersection of Park and Fairview Roads around 7:30 a.m.

Police said the Carolinas Cab Company driver was stabbed by Brian Chandler during a trip through SouthPark.  The minivan crashed into a telephone pole at 4915 Park Road, and after the wreck Chandler fled the scene.

Chandler, 41, picked up the cab off Carowinds Boulevard.  He cut his monitoring device after the crash and was caught at an apartment complex near the crash, according to officials.

CMPD records show Chandler was arrested on August 23 for various charges, including stalking, making harassing phone calls and filing a false police report.  He left jail on a $163,000 bond on September 16.

The cab driver, identified as Gary Hinson, was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.  He is listed in stable condition after suffering lacerations from a knife to the face, head, neck, arms and hands.

Eastbound Fairview Road was closed Friday morning while police conducted the investigation.  The investigation also caused delays on Tyvola and Park roads, and on other secondary roads in the area.

Chandler was taken to CMC for injuries he sustained during the car crash.  He is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, vehicle theft and interference with an electronic monitoring devices.
