CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Spending time with your kids.  It remains one of the most important things a father can do for his children.

And as Father’s Day approaches, NBC Charlotte reached out to psychologists to learn how dads can build stronger relationships with their kids.

Frank Gaskill of Southeast Psych says while it’s important to spend quality time with your children, it’s also important to make  “regular” time.

Your child needs to know he can count on you for that time, that it’s predictable.  A routine walk on the weekends can be more meaningful to a child than a sporadic 30-minute game of catch in the back yard.

The anticipation is sometimes greater than the actual event itself, he says.

Gaskill also recommends learning how to enjoy what your child enjoys.

That can be video games like Minecraft or Supermash Brothers.  He says busy dads can skype from work or text their kids that you love them.
