STATESVILLE, N.C. -- One woman told NBC Charlotte from her hospital bed about her experience in last week's deadly church bus crash.

Norma Hellard, 78,  is one of just three Statesville seniors not ejected from their church bus that crashed on their way back from Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Six of her friends -- all members of Front Street Baptist Church died at the scene. Twelve other church members, including Norma, were injured.

With flowers and a card from kindergartners to comfort her---Norma leans on her faith.

"Well, I think that no matter where we are or what we're doing, god's in control.  It doesn't matter what we think.  It’s god,” she said.

A memorial service will be held tonight for six of the people killed in the bus crash. The service is open to the public.

The Front Street Baptist victims were Cloyce Matheny, Marsha McLelland, Randy and Barbara Morrison, Brenda Smith and John Wright. Two people in other vehicles also were killed.

A benefit fund has been set up for the victims.

It begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Statesville High School.
