TEGA CAY, S.C. -- City Council members in Tega Cay heard emotional pleas from residents Monday night to do something about the continual problems with sewage spills.

The latest round of spills happened over the long Labor Day weekend.  Some of the sewage that spilled went into Lake Wylie where children were enjoying the last weekend of summer.

“Those were my children swimming in that water,” said Gus Matchunus, who implored the Council to take some kind of action against Tega Cay Water Service and its parent company, Utilities Inc.

Another neighbor, Linda Stevenson -- who started a group of concerned residents to fight the company -- said, “It is a crying shame when somebody stands there and watches their children swimming in a lake with sewage.”

An engineering study was done of the sewage system and it recommends the city bypass Utilities Inc. and pump sewage directly to Rock Hill’s system.

Neighbors like Tom Holmes said something has to be done, even if it means filing a lawsuit.

“I just don’t understand how a whole city can be held hostage by a water treatment company,” he said.

The Council listened to comments but did not take any formal action.
