CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Close to 13,000 people came out to uptown to celebrate the new year.

Crowds packed  Romare Bearden Park as Charlotte celebrated the new year with alcohol-free festivities for children and adults at First Night Charlotte.

This year's event was held at uptown's new park without purchased wristbands. First Night offered music and fireworks to kickoff the new year for those here celebrating in uptown.

"It has been a long time since I've been down here," said Mardee Baker. "It's fun to come down with my sisters and celebrate."

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police did not report any major incidents during the event.
