CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Loved ones gathered for a candlelight vigil in memory of a local man killed by a hit and run driver.

Carrignton “Jake” Ware, 50 of West Charlotte was struck and killed Saturday night, while on his way to the bus stop.

He was found in the middle of Allegheny Street near Pebblestone Street.

On Wednesday, his family held a vigil at Harding University High School, near the scene of the hit and run accident.

About a hundred people came out to show their support to the family and stories to reflect on his life.

One young man said Jake taught him how to “be strong.”

He said when he got depressed, he often asked himself what “Jake” would do. "What would Jake do? Jake can't do stuff I can do, but he did it. Who am I to pout about stuff,” he said.

Jake had cerebral palsy, but his sister, Dawn Hines says he lived life to the fullest.

"He never saw his handicap. He never saw his limitations. He always felt he was doing what he was supposed to do,” she said.

Ware will be remembered for the variety of hats he always wore, along with his infectious smile.

Friends say his faith was strong and despite his disability and all that he had endured, he never complained.

The family chose not to dwell on their sadness,  instead chose to celebrate his life.

“I'm just going to remember him and be thankful God allowed him to cross my path,” said one friend.

Police have not been able to find the driver, and continue to ask for the public’s assistance in the case.

The family says they are praying for that driver, and the “heavy burden” he must be carrying.  They have put their faith in God that in time it will be resolved.

"I know it will pass, but I will not focus on it when it comes to pass, because Jake is in a much better place right now,” she said.

Ware’s funeral will take place Thursday, February 19, 2014 at Reeder Memorial Baptist Church at 1pm.
